School Attendance Still Good ... Please Continue to Watch For Flu

Attendance in the Deer Park School District has been very good for the first month of the school year.  While it has been reported in the media that a number of school districts have had a spike in absenteeism, that has yet to be the case in Deer Park.

We continue to ask that parents keep their children home if they are feeling sick (cold and/or flu like symptomes including fever 100 degrees or higher, coughing, sneezing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, tiredness or extreme exhaustion) and have them return only after being fever free (without medication) for 24 hours.  This is hard as kids often do not want to miss school for fear of falling behind, but we do ask that sick children stay home.

The flu is a highly contagious viral infection that affects the lungs and sinuses.  To prevent the spread of the flu, we are actively reminding our staff and students to use simple hygiene techniques, including:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

  • Cover your nose and mouth - cough or sneeze into your sleeve/elbow, not into your hands. You may also use a tissue when you sneeze, cough or blow your nose. Quickly throw away used tissues and then wash your hands.

  • Avoid close contact with sick people - most germs are spread when a sick person coughs, sneezes or talks.

  • Don't share food, utensils, beverages, towels, lipstick, toys or anything else that might become contaminated with germs.

  • Stay at home if you have a cold, fever, cough and/or flu-like symptoms.

The H1N1 vaccination is less than a month away and we will be working with the Regional Health District to facilitate a voluntary vaccination program in Deer Park.
