WASL Test to Take Place in April and May |
All seventh grade students will take the Washington Assessment of Students Learning (WASL) during April 14 – May 2. Students will be tested in the areas of Math, Reading, and Writing. The WASL tests are designed to measure student achievement toward a set of high state standards called Essential Learning’s. Students in each school district are tested annually to see how they perform against those standards.
Also during April 14 – May 2, all eighth grade students will take the WASL for Math, Reading and Science. Sixth grade students will be tested in Math and Reading. These tests are important and parents can help their child prepare for the WASL testing by making sure students get adequate rest. Eating healthy foods and having nutritious meals provided for them is also important. Students should do their best on this WASL test.

Deer Park Middle School Students Jumprope to Support the American Heart Association |
Students at Deer Park Middle School participated in the national fundraiser to raise money for the American Heart Association on Feb. 7. Students in schools nationwide participate in the annual fundraiser which supports research toward heart diseases and childhood congenital diseases.
The sixth graders participated in the Jumprope for Heart on Feb. 7 while the seventh and eighth graders played basketball in Hoops for Heart. “Ten different jumproping events took place with the sixth graders throughout the day, and seventh and eighth graders played in basketball related activities as the culminating activity,” said middle school teacher Dean Largent. The students had practiced jumproping and basketball fundaments in their Health/Fitness classes, but the fundraising aspect was totally voluntary. “Typically, our school raises about $500 ,” shared Largent, who applauds the students for their efforts.

Deer Park Middle School Students Strive For Gold |
Students at Deer Park Middle School now have more to strive for than good grades. As of January 28, the students have been eligible for gold. The DPMS Gold Card that is. While DPMS stands for Deer Park Middle School, it also stands for “Determination Perseverance Means Success.” The DPMS Gold Cards will be awarded to students to recognize and encourage academic achievement, attendance, punctuality and student conduct. To be eligible, each quarter students must have no more than five absences and no more than five tardies, no missing assignments and no F’s, and have no discipline referrals to the administration. The gold of the gold cards is more than just the surface color. It comes from Deer Park, Loon Lake and North Spokane merchants who will provide discounts and “free-bies” to DPMS Card holders when they make purchases at their businesses. “It’s really a benefit to the students and the businesses,” said DPMS Principal Brent Seedall. “The students earn recognition for their hard work and the businesses have the opportunity to sell extra merchandise to the student’s family members and other friends. Businesses also benefit from the free advertising of having their names printed on the back of the DPMS Cards,” Seedall said. Principal Seedall started a similar incentive program at Cheney Middle School a number of years ago that was a huge success. Seedall said “When the CMS Card incentive program was started at Cheney Middle School, discipline referrals decreased, attendance and grades increased and the entire atmosphere changed in a positive way. I can see implementing the DPMS Card incentive program at Deer Park Middle School will have the same dramatic effects on behavior, grades, punctuality, attendance, and hopefully, test scores.” Businesses in Deer Park, Loon Lake and North Spokane who have agreed to offer special discounts or free items on the DPMS Card are the following: Classic Cafe and Coffeehouse—1 free 16 oz Italian soda Deer Park Bowl—1 free game of matinee bowling per visit Express Way (Exxon)—buy 1 small fountain drink and get 1 free Loon Lake Video and Pizza—buy a large pizza and get 1 free small cone McDonald’s—buy any value meal and get 1 free sundae or apple pie Pizza Factory—1 free small breadsticks Rosauers—rent 1 movie and get 1 free Subway—buy a 6 inch or foot long and get 1 free 21 oz drink Yokes—buy 1 regular priced sandwich and get a free medium drink free Pattison’s Roller Rink—$2 off admission price Pizza Hut—buy a medium or large pizza and get 2 free medium drinks Quiznos—10% off a student's order Taco Time—buy 1 menu item of any value and get 1 menu item of equal or lesser value free Wonderland Golf and Games—buy 1 game of golf and get 1 free Westside Pizza - Coupon good for 1 med pizza with 2 toppings, bread or cinnamon sticks and a two-litre bottle of soda

College Bound Scholarship |
|
The Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board has extended the deadline for the College Bound Scholarship application.
* The deadline for this year's applicants has been extended to June 30, 2008.
* There is a one-time exception for this year's eighth graders (academic year 2007-2008). They will have until the end of their ninth grade (academic year 2008-2009) to apply. This is only for this year's eighth graders. Presently, Washington ranks 32nd nationally in the percentage of low-income students who participate in post-secondary education. Within 10 years, these students will represent one-third of our state's graduating class. Without action, 72% of these 28,000 low-income students currently in seventh grade are unlikely to even aspire to a college education, let alone enroll. Now, thanks to a new state-sponsored scholarship, there is hope and incentive for students who otherwise might not consider college as an option because of their family’s income. This four-year scholarship, in combination with other state aid, can help cover the cost of college tuition, fees and books for low-income students who sign a pledge in seventh or eighth grade. This year’s eighth grade class only has until June 1 to apply! So, what is the Washington College Bound Scholarship? It is a four-year scholarship that covers the cost of college tuition, fees and books for low-income students who sign a pledge in 7th or 8th grade promising to graduate from high school and to demonstrate good citizenship. This program provides hope and incentive for students and families who otherwise might not consider college as an option because of its cost.
Who's eligible? Seventh and eighth grade students from families who qualify for free or reduced-priced lunches may participate. Family income must remain at 65 percent or less of the state’s median income by the time of high school graduation to permit a scholarship award. In addition to meeting the family income requirements, students must also sign and adhere to the pledge mentioned previously. What's the reason for this program? The intent of the program is simple: it is designed to inspire students to begin making their college and career plans without worrying about the cost of attending college. Our state and our nation have an increasing need for highly-educated and highly-skilled workers. Without intervention, this need will either go unfilled or will be filled with growing numbers of highly educated adults from other nations. So, what's the process for participation? Washington's Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB) is administering the College Bound Scholarship Program and has produced a number of helpful documents. An introductory brochure is available and give a nice overview of the program. The have produced a informative document that answers many frequently asked questions. You can also find more information about the program at the HEC Board's website or by calling 1.888.535.0747; additionally, by visiting the HEC Board website, you may apply online. If you would rather mail the application, it can be downloaded here.

Parent Night Celebration on March 13, 2008 |
| Deer Park Middle School will be hosting a Parent Night Celebration on Thursday, March 13, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Instead of the parent conferences that have been held in the past, this year our staff again plans to share with parents the talents and accomplishments of their students. The main building will be the scene of small group musical performances, an art exhibition, displays of student literature, civics and history projects, science experiments, drama presentations, archery demonstrations, and a cooking class. Parents will have the opportunity to learn about computer applications students use, try sample WASL questions and probability games, watch a dance routine, and visit the “Sweet Tooth” shop. Sixth grade parents can attend an informational meeting about Camp Reed. Parents will receive a map and schedule of events upon arrival. Students and siblings must be with parents at all times, since DPMS will be a busy and exciting place on March 13. |
November Parent Conferences at DPMS |
Individualized Student Learning Plans (SLPs) have become an integral component of how we meet the academic needs of students in our schools. The process of identifying each student's specific learning needs in a formal Student Learning Plan begins in 5th grade (using the previous year's assessment data) and is carried out each year thereafter. These learning plans are initially embedded in fifth grade parent/teacher conferences and the process then continues in conferences at Deer Park Middle School as well as at Deer Park High School. Deer Park Middle School will host SLP conferences during elementary conference week. On Monday, November 19, students at DPMS will be released at 12:10 so that SLP conferences can be held for the rest of that afternoon. - 12:45 - 3:30 - scheduled SLP conferences
- 4:00 - 7:00 - arena conferences in the gym (all parents are welcome).
Parents of middle school students will soon receive more information regarding the SLP conference time for their student. Teachers will be contacting parents in early November to schedule individual SLP conferences (if applicable). Teachers at DPMS are hopeful that all parents will take advantage of the arena conferences from 4:00 – 7:00pm. The conferences are a wonderful opportunity for parents to check and monitor the progress of their child and also to get involved with DPMS. If parents cannot attend and have questions or concerns about their child’s progress, they are encouraged to call DPMS at 464-5800 and set up an appointment to meet with their child’s teachers. |
