A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL BANTIS

The other evening I journeyed to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital to visit a child who was a patient due to a terrible case of pneumonia.  First of all, trying to get there was a challenge with all the traffic and with all the various ‘wings’ and hallways that seem to go into oblivion.  As I walked through the building, I had to go through the Child’s Oncology Wing in order to get to where I needed to be.

There was a skywalk that connected two areas, and as I entered the skywalk, it was filled with gurgling, splashing, and fun ‘ocean-like’ noises that had a calming effect on me.  There were beautiful blue ocean decorations, and if you looked up as you walked, you would observe different multicolored fish hanging from the ceiling moving silently from the strings that they were hanging by.  As I approached one, I could see it had a name on it.  I stopped to listen to the gurgling of the ocean sounds, and a nurse went passed me.  In my inquisitiveness, I spoke to her and asked her about the fish with names on them.  “Those are the names of children who have died due to cancer or other illnesses.”  “Many people don’t know what to do when a child dies, so they give money to have the child’s name put on a beautiful multicolored fish, and that fish will float in the ‘sea of life’”.  It was so sad, and yet so beautiful, I had to sit down and just think.  I just can’t imagine losing a child!  There are days that we become so very upset with kids actions, that we could ‘crown them!’  Yet, one never envisions losing their life’s blood to a disease or something that they can’t control.  It is overwhelming, and so scary.  I got up and moved on to my visit with the family and the child, who is getting better, but it is a slow process, and her lungs are filled with gunk that must come out.

In leaving, I walked the same way through the ‘sea of life’ and I walked slowly to read every name on every fish.  I said a silent prayer in respect of the families who lost the precious loved one, and went on and out into a brisk evening.
In summary, I want every parent to know that I honor them and the raising of their children.  It is a difficult job, and one doesn’t get a book when that child enters the world, so if the parent has questions, they can go to the book to find out how to deal with the challenge or what to do when in need.  Parents do the best job that they can in raising their children.  These precious young beings are so special, and no matter what, they are the BEST.  So, hug and kiss your kidlets and love them to pieces.  One never knows what the new day will bring.  I am honored to be a part of every child’s life, and I hope that ‘Awesome’ Arcadia gives each child the best we can to make them life long learners.   I am so lucky to be here everyday with your children.  Thank you, Parents and Guardians for letting me be a part of your child’s life.  It is a privilege.
